Success Stories from the Field: 2012


Solutions in Action are examples of the ways UF/IFAS Extension touches the lives of Floridians. All over the peninsula, we reach people just like you. Find out how we provide solutions every day.

UF/IFAS Extension has a local office in every county in the state. Offices and counties are grouped regionally into five districts, and county faculty within these districts work together to meet the needs of their local communities through educational programs, field day demonstrations, and one-on-one interaction with local residents.

GardeningNorthwest District

The Northwest District consists of the following counties: Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton, and Washington.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include the Sensory Garden in Escambia County and the Viticulture Program in Leon County. Sensory Garden program allows children and adults to experience gardening with all five senses and is designed to make it easier for those with difficulty getting arou nd in other gardens. The Viticulture program helps small farmers grow grapes in Northwest Florida.

4-H CampersNortheast District

The Northeast District consists of the following counties: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Madison, Nassau, Suwannee, Taylor, and Union.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include 4-H Camp Cherry Lake in Madison County. This camp is one of four that operate across the state and offer kids a place to experience and appreciate nature. The camps also offer educational programs that focus on science and technology.

Spring festival signCentral District

The Central District consists of the following counties: Brevard, Citrus, Flagler, Hernando, Lake, Marion, Osceola, Orange, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns, Sumter, and Volusia.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include the annual Agritunity Expo held in Sumter County. The program brings together vendors, University of Florida experts and industry professionals to educate farmers from across the state on the latest information and equipment.

Farm TourSouth Central District

The South Central District consists of the following counties: Charlotte, Collier, Desoto, Hardee, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, and Sarasota.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include Farm City Week in Manatee County. This program is designed to educate residents about the importance of agriculture to their community's economy, ecosystem and health.

BoatSouth District

The South District consists of the following counties: Broward, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Indian River, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie.

Success Stories coming out of the district this year include the Boating Ecotourism Program in Brevard County. The program educates local charter fishing boat captains about the local ecosystem, animals and environment so they can provide Ecotours of the area.

Statewide programsStatewide Programs

Success Stories for statewide programs this year include the 4-H Legislature Program in Tallahassee. Every year hundreds of 4-H kids take over the Florida State Capitol to run a mock government from the actual Florida House and Senate floors.
